Taking the temperature of today's popular culture

Blair Witch Comes to ABC January 25, 2010

I’ve seen a new side of Earnest Jake (EJ) the past couple of weeks. I might even say I’ve been a little proud of him. He stood up to Crazy Michelle last week and sent her home when she asked him to, and this week he sent both girls from the two-on-one date home. What’s gotten into him? A backbone?

Tonight’s show started with the gals packing up, leaving the mansion, and jumping into RVs to travel up the PCH. Jake rode his motorcycle, of course. Every time I see him on that bike I think of Chris Harrison’s blog saying Jake doesn’t really like motorcycles. I wonder if it’s a stunt-rider each time…

The first date was in a vineyard with Gia. Sweet date. They roasted marshmallows, spun the bottle. Cute stuff. EJ seems to be into her. Maybe it’s because she’s a swimsuit model but she does seem like a nice girl – though she wore stilettos on a camping date. (She is from Manhattan). She got the rose. No surprise there.

Second date was the group date with sand surfing, jumping, dunebug racing, and some random cocktail party at a random pink pleather-lined restaurant. Cory finally saw some one one one time with Jake, as did Tenley. I was wondering when this was ever going to happen. Tenley took full advantage and made out with our Bachelor. Cory “moves a little slower” – and good for her. I don’t see her lasting very long but I appreciate where she’s coming from.

The girls continue to hate on Vienna. Reality Steve is saying she’s the last one standing. I just can’t believe that to be true at this point. Maybe it’s editing, but Jake really seems to like her for some reason.

Then came time for the two-on-one date. These are always the most painful as both girls have to pack their bags knowing one will go home. This one with Kathryn and Ella was especially painful as EJ sent both girls a-packing. He did it in a very expected Earnest way, but it was still hard to watch. Especially for sweet Ella. She really thought he could be a dad to her little boy. P.S.I hate that ABC used her son like that last week to pull America’s heartstrings. They knew he wasn’t going to keep her. I wonder why they didn’t call in Rozzzzzlyn’s son…

After both women drove off for their 30-seconds of tearful interview time in the limo, Jake leaned against the wall and stared off into space while the kids who shot the Blair Witch Project filmed him through the swaying tree limbs in grainy image. I know ABC needs to build in some extra drama to make up for EJ’s lack of spunk and interest, but must we get into creative filming?  And, then the throwing of the rose into the fire? Wow. That was a stretch, ABC.

So the rose ceremony came – and it promised to be the most dramatic ever. While it didn’t live up to that billing, it was a bit dramatic for EJ. He is really after the woman of his dreams cuz he’s throwing girls from the train left and right. Tenley and Gia already had roses, so that left five women and four roses. Hmm. Jake didn’t like those odds, so the Blair Witch kids showed up again and followed Jake outside the rose ceremony as he “looked for” Chris Harrison to seek some “advice”. I love how they staged Chris standing out in the garden having some sort of production meeting when Jake found him. Good work, Blair Witch kids!  You were able to keep up with all that walking and searching Jake did. We can forgive the bouncing camera shots.

After Jake’s bumbling speech with Chris, he decided to give up a rose and only hand out three tonight – Ali, Cory and…yes, Vienna!  All the haters unite. Ali is on the warpath.  Tenley bats her eyes and sighs. Cory is simply “shocked”. Vienna smirks.

Desperado Account Manager Ashleigh was disgusted and cried her way out the door, while the lone brunette, whatever her name is, held her head high and maybe did a little Vienna-bashing before her exit.

So, for our friend EJ, this was a very dramatic night. Truthfully, I’m not feeling any of these girls for Jake. They just aren’t nice enough for him.  What do you think? Think Reality Steve is right in his claim that Vienna is the last woman standing?  I hope not, but this is “reality TV”. Anything could happen.

I’ve heard, too, that Vienna is “the one”. Hard to believe with what they’e shown us so far. There must be some major editing going on!
